Community @ CeBIT 2010

The CeBIT is over and some of us had a chance to meet many of the important guys of the Xtreamer company and people related to them. We spent two days together and had a lot of fun and achieved some good things.

Even the CeBIT 2010 was one day shorter than last year, their faces told us it was a long and tiring week for the guys at the Xtreamer booth. Anyways, we visited them on the last two days, on Friday and Saturday. It has been a very good and refreshing experience for us community members to join and meet these guys face to face to talk with them about our devices and the near future.

mercury17, spaceshuttle, ahrensfd, Spare and me – with family or friends met with X (admin), George Lee (director), Mark Appel (Benelux), a manager from Realtek, the sales manager, art director and system administrator and more. It was a small booth in the Korean pavillion but definitely the most interesting booth for our growing community. They presented the Xtreamer Pro (Media Player), Xtreamer e-TRAYz (Personal Storage), Xtreamer Dual (2 x 3.5″ HDD enclosure), Xtreamer + Sidewinder (passive cooler) and the original Xtreamer at the booth. They demonstrated how the Xtreamer Pro is able to play 1080p 16ref videos and the root menu with the wallpaper art (which is customizable with your own wallpapers) looks nice. If I remember correctly, skins will be more safe to create. You just put new skin images into a specific location and the Xtreamer will use them (hookup) from that location without the need to overwrite the original images. This way you can revert to original skins as easy as pie. The new Xtreamer 1 which will come with a factory-fitted Sidewinder might start shipping from next month. I also saw the new Xtreamer Headphones (but damn, I forgot to try them) and in the Xtreamer booklet you would find first pictures of the Xtreamer IPCam which is coming soon.

That wasn’t all… in CeBIT’s “Planet Reseller” area, their co-branding partner Trekstor presented both the Xtreamer and e-TRAYz to the visitors in a bigger booth/stand.

On Friday evening, after the CeBIT closed, we were invited to join them for a dinner at the hotel where they stayed. We had lots of delicious food (Greek), the hotel manager even had a belly dancer organized for the evening which was a little embarassing for me but hey, you don’t have this everyday, do you…

… everyone, the Xtreamer staff and the community people were there, later the Trekstor guys joined us and it was a great evening with lots of talking, eating, drinking (incredible how much ouzo some people can drink), laughing and dancing (lucky I didn’t have to). Very surprising for me as I really thought we would have a calm dinner together to talk about firmware and stuff … if I remember correctly we enjoyed the evening till around midnight until we left.

On Saturday we took the chance to demo some community projects to Xtreamer and Trekstor. There was not much time so we could only show them a few projects like the PHP Installer for e-TRAYz and XMP or the RSS jukeboxes for the Xtreamer. We tried to show them how they work, how easy it is to install stuff or change skins etc… but also showed them, what we are NOT able to do and the good thing is they will try to help us as much as they are allowed to, regarding their contracts with Realtek.

You could feel how they really want and desire to help us but also that it is not as easy as some of you may think. I walked around the Korean and Chinese pavillion in the same hall and it was like every second exhibitor had a media player in his portfolio and all their menus and GUI actually sucked, in case they had something to demo at all. If all of them had what we have on Xtreamer I guess more people will suffer from the bad quality of other cheap brands than people who will actually benefit from shared resources. It’s a vicious circle and more complex than that but I got this impression and I think you get the idea.

Altogether, our time together at the CeBIT was very exciting and made us feel a  lot better about all the negative vibes that was/is swirling around in the various communities. We made important contacts with the key people at the Xtreamer and other companies and I am sure all of us will benefit from all that we’ve shown to and collected from them.

Lots of internal talk has been shared, forgive me that I am not allowed to write about it here but the message I get out of that is, that Xtreamer is not going to disappear some day. Soon, everyone in the tech scene will know about Xtreamer, no matter in the media player scene or others…

Xtreamer Pro Teaser

Some incomplete information about the Xtreamer Pro has been released by non-official sources a week ago and people were wondering why there is no official statement. Well, there is…

Leaked specs and GUI concepts which have been published on other places than the official Xtreamer forum are either “very inaccurate or outdated” and given what they’ve shown to us global moderators back in November this sounds reliable. We’ve already seen this before. So the last thing one should do is to be “alarmed by rumours”.

True though: the Xtreamer Pro looks like an Xtreamer in an e-TRAYz case. Personally (wish), I expected a more Hi-Fi-style case design… something similar to those Samsung BluRay players… anyway, looking at it from another point of view, the e-TRAYz has proven to be a valuable solid box which does look quite appealing, not only because of it’s tiny and cute size… but in the end it will always look more like a NAS than a mediaplayer to me. How about you?

A teaser has been published on the main site which confirms the case design. Check it out but keep in mind: if you’ve seen the “leaks” before, this won’t be anything new to you maybe.

Note: it’s a teaser introducing the Xtreamer Pro which will be shown at CeBIT 2010 in Germany this coming March. An official specifications sheet is not available and finalized yet!

Silence before the storm…

It’s been quiet in the last couple of weeks. But talking and listening to the admins indicate very clearly that they’ve been busy with a lot of tasks on different projects in different teams and they are very close to reveal some big news. I expect that we’ll know this week. Be sure that when there are news to announce, you will read them here or in the official Xtreamer forum. This is not a place for rumours

[UPDATE²] Third BETA release of v2.1 and TOP ISSUES list

Today a new beta was released to the beta tester group, with a short changelog. This is a response to a two(?) hour meeting with our admin in the chat some days ago in which we compiled a TOP ISSUES list of items which need to be fixed or implemented in our Xtreamer because these are issues asked again and again by us.

So we made this agreement with xtreamer (the admin and project leader) to make this list to be the base for the R&D team to concentrate on in the following weeks. It does not mean a feature-freeze coz besides these items there are still nice flowers along the road that you can pick up from the sides… like the Jukebox which was another topic today for about an hour in the chat.

TOP ISSUES list:

  1. HDMI issues (purple screen)
  2. WIFI issues (DHCP not ready, manual SSID/IP for WiFi)
  3. Subsampling/downmixing to 2.0 16 bit 48hz PCM
  4. DTS-HD / TrueHD
  5. DTS out of sync
  6. Progressive DCT JPEG
  7. MPEG-2 TRP without PAT
  8. MP3 via UPnP causes Xtreamer GUI to reboot

So that is the list… what do you think? And as a first response there is this new beta firmware of v2.1 which aims at fixing item #1 on the list.

What’s new:

  1. New setting menu for HDMI manual and HDMI YCbCr set Menu (Setup Menu – A/V Menu)
    a) User can set HDMI setting manually (Default, Option1, Option2, Option3, Option4)
    b) User can set HDMI YCbCr
    - Auto : default (YCbCr 4:4:4)
    - On : Set YcbCr 4:2:2

Not sure if these settings will make it into the final release if the HDMI issue can be fixed meanwhile but it’s good to see that there is some movement into our direction.

Update 2009-12-09

If you are not a betatester and experience the purple screen issue, please read here.

Update² 2010-02-10

Okay, let’s update the TOP ISSUES list we “negotiated” with the admins before and see what is the status quo:

  1. HDMI issues (purple screen)
  2. WIFI issues (DHCP not ready, manual SSID/IP for WiFi)
  3. Subsampling/downmixing to 2.0 16 bit 48hz PCM
  4. DTS-HD / TrueHD
  5. DTS out of sync
  6. Progressive DCT JPEG
  7. MPEG-2 TRP without PAT
  8. MP3 via UPnP causes Xtreamer GUI to reboot

Hmm… 3 out of 8 is not sooo exciting and I still wish item no. 8 would get a little more priority but we have some nice and very useful additions/modifications put into the latest v2.2 release. Anyways, few weeks left and we can say bye to the v2.x branch and move on to v3 which will hopefully inherit the best (working) features of v2, plus adding a working jukebox (I can’t mention that often enough hehe).

What do you think should be put in a new TOP ISSUES/WISHES list for v3? Jukebox, Search&Index will be there… 24p must have to work properly by then… what else?

[UPDATE²] Xtreamer BETA around the corner…

It’s me again, your friendly spammer next door! Get prepared for the next BETA test. We are expecting a medium to major bugfix/feature release within 2 or 3 days. All you beta testers out there, wake up and get ready.

It has gone quiet around the Xtreamer after the e-TRAYz has been released. All the action and fuzz was only about the e-TRAYz recently but the Xtreamer is back! The R&D team seemed very busy putting the Realtek SDK puzzle together. Today we were given the chance to sneak a peek once more and the result looks promising. To avoid misunderstandings: this next BETA release is not the highly anticipated v3 with the integrated jukebox with searching and indexing abilities, nope… it’s a v2.x.x addressing improvements and bugfixes, suggested and reported by the community. Once these have been confirmed to work they (R&D) can take this firmware as a base to concentrate on the v3 release which will finally have a jukebox *wiping tears away* and be released to us approximately in March…

So what can we expect in the next BETA? Improved BD(MV) support, new effects for your photo slideshows, improved WiFi settings, no more DTS out of sync etc etc etc … sounds nice? Hope I didn’t reveal too much, the list is a bit longer stay tuned!

[thx for reading - mavvy]

[UPDATE] Movie Jukebox, IPCam… anybody home?

Hey folks! It’s been a while since I wrote the last blog entry so I should start with nothing less than a feature, which almost everyone is longing for. Admins and some Global Moderators had a meeting today and we had been given the chance to get a peek on the progress of the so much anticipated movie jukebox.

First of all: Geeez… they have been REALLY working on it!!! What they’ve shown to us, gave me a feeling of satisfaction, relief and a lot of hope at once for the upcoming weeks until firmware v3 will be released. It encouraged me to believe that the wait will be worth and that they are still on the right track, showing us, that they DO listen to community feedback. Okay, enough of the apple-polishing If you know me then you know that I belong to those guys pushing this jukebox thingy because I really want it, g.. damn it

As you may have guessed, the details are still confidential and we can’t give you specific details because the work is still in progress so even we (GMs) don’t know how it will look in the end. They presented a movie jukebox concept to us. Not on paper, not on images, no… it was a video capture of an actual Xtreamer running this new jukebox. One thing I can tell for sure: the way you are used to navigate through your Xtreamer GUI will change… it won’t be the reinvention of the wheel but I like the changes quite much.

Still remember that Let’s talk about a Movie Jukebox thread? Cover wall, search, indexing… it’s there, right in that concept demo video. Xtreamer team…give it the final polish and make it look pretty and fancy and stuff with all your passion put into its design and functionality. Only then, we, the community will stop nagging!

Any news on the IPCam? Well, admins have been very careful with leaking information recently. We talked about it today and I can tell that it will be capable of streaming up to 1080p h.264 video content to your Xtreamer or… well, that’s a secret they should present to you themselves!.. it looks like the Xtreamer team is very proud and excited about their new toy and even the e-TRAYz team seems to be positive about what their colleagues created. The IPCam is an addition to expand the functionality of your Xtreamer. It’s all about the Xtreamer, we should not forget this or even think that they would neglect our little gadget for new toys!

Yeah, I know what you want to ask now… WHEN??? Let’s ask the crystal ball… all those leaked infos and rumours about Sidewinder, new SDK, new firmware, new Xtreamer Pro… they all rumoured to be revealed in Q1, 2010. At least the Sidewinder should be ready for the online shop the coming days, it’s about time, don’t let the people wait any longer! The CeBIT will take place in two months (March) so it’s just a logic thing to expect the announcement of the IPCam and (maybe) the Xtreamer Pro at the CeBIT. Just guessing.

Update 2009/01/18

We have a first image of the Sidewinder product box, posted by XtreamerAdmin:
http://forum.xtreamer.net/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=6998&p=81437#p81437

… and a new e-TRAYz BETA software is expected to be released this week. Stay tuned.

Back to the Future: new IRC chat

There are some interesting news for the “older” users among us. Xtreamer.net has approved to switch and test a new chat (based on IRC), since the old flash based chat wasn’t very reliable. So everyone who likes to join us with his/her favorite IRC client is very welcome.

Use the following data to login:

Host: chat.xtreamer.net
Port: 6667
Channel: #xtreamer

If you don’t know how to use IRC, don’t worry. It’s as easy as joining the old chat. Just go to: http://chat.xtreamer.net

… or click on the appropriate links in the forum and you will sign in automatically with your forum nickname which leads me to the first request: if you don’t own a forum account you will be asked to sign in with a nickname of your choice. Please don’t use any “Guest” or “Anonymous” nickname.

Maybe you are using an IRC client or a tool with IRC support and you didn’t know? Here is a selection of popular clients / tools which you might know or even use already:

Some useful commands that you can use in the chat:

  • if you want to register your nickname to avoid other people from using it:
    /register <password> <email>
  • when you join the chat with a registered nickname you have to identify yourself:
    /id <password>
  • to change your nickname
    /nick <newnickname>
  • to list currently opened channels:
    /list
  • to open your own (temporary!) channel for a quick conference with friends:
    /join #<yourchannelname>

Last but not least: please be nice to other people in the forum / chat and act like a reasonable person would act.

  • No foul language
  • No flaming
  • No bullshit

Happy New Year!

Now that everyone on this planet should be in 2010 let me use the opportunity to wish you all a Happy New Year. May all your wishes for health and prosperity come true!

The CES is around the corner and even Xtreamer may not be listed as an exhibitor I am sure there will be new gadgets announced. Competitors gave birth to different variants of their media players, why should Xtreamer not take this path. And the forum party which was announced sometime in early December is still due, with the new roadmap on it’s agenda but I still can’t give you any date when it will take place coz I simply don’t know.

I believe the next two months will be exciting for us: Xtreamer Sidewinder (the official and long awaited cooling solution for the Xtreamer), Xtreamer Pro (successor of the Xtreamer, which will definitely come soon) and the almost forgotten Xtreamer IPcam and Xtreamer Netbook.

Nevertheless, 2009 has been a “difficult” year. On the one hand we still remember recent issues which let us scratch our heads when thinking of them and we still miss important features like proper HD audio handling or the movie jukebox which are still in the queue. But on the other hand we should honour that for most people (including me) the Xtreamer is doing what they need it for. The Xtreamer team has done well in satisfying the majority of the customers. But with more and more 7.1 AVRs being sold in 2010 (even the lower priced AVRs offer 7.1 sound now), we should not rest to think that HD audio only matters for power users. Competitors, whose devices also base on the Realtek chip are beginning to implement YAMJ and similar features. So it is about time that they will provide us with a movie jukebox solution.

What will 2010 bring? Let Xtreamer surprise us with a new roadmap soon *wish* … over and out.

Second BETA release of v2.1

Today our betatesters group received a new beta of the v2.1 firmware. The release notes tell us nothing about the upcoming On2 VP6 license yet as mentioned in the official Xtreamer Chat before but the release has some other nice improvements.

One of these being the DVD CSS license which gives you the ability now to play retail DVDs via an optical USB DVD drive/burner. Of course AutoRun and AudioCD is supported as well Shall I mention here yet that I heard an admin saying something about a planned Xtreamer Slim USB DVD Drive in the chat? Damn, this thought still keeps me from buying a nice Samsung SE-S084C which I wanted to have since the last 3 or 4 months.

Back on topic… some other nice additions in the next fw release are the option to have your own font files used for subtitles and along with this, so long long long awaited feature to disable subtitles by default, STRIKE!

If all goes well and no major new bugs are found, we can expect a last beta version to clean out small isues before the final v2.1 get’s released. Again, this release does not have a Jukebox yet but i’ll keep pushing.

What’s new:

  1. Network shares (samba/NFS) auto scan and mount
    a) Accessible from “Home->Network Shares” menu
    b) Later it will be merged with “Medialibrary->NET” menu
    c) Network shares searching time will be reduced later
    d) Currently don’t supports password protected shares and wireless network, will support soon.
  2. DVD CSS support
  3. User’s font support for subtitle only
    a) Font file should be in internal HDD(first partition) or UBS HDD(first partition) in “user_font” folder.
    b) Font file name should be “font1.ttf”
    c) Before changing font file please stop the playing moving
    d) Multiple user’s font will be supported soon, currently supporting only one.
  4. Subtitle on/off option
    a) Subtitle can be turn on/off from “Setup->Playback->Subtitle Default”
    b) Factory default in “subtitle on”
  5. Subtitle border thickness can be changed
    a) During movie playback, press subtitle button from remote control and select thickness
    b) Thickness option is next to size option.
  6. DVD AutoRun
    a) From “Setup->Playback->DVD AutoRun” on/off option can be selected
  7. Unzip and Archive option from Xtreamer web UI
    a) From Xtreamer web UI .zip, .tar, .tar.bz2 type files can be unzipped
    b) Just click unzip icon located next to file name, select target dir and press “unzip” button
    c) So user can upload more than 10 files at a time as a zip file
    d) Select “File Manager->Archive” option and choose folder to make archive(tar)
    e) Folder can be downloaded at a time instead of downloading files one by one

Bugs fixed:

  1. Smooth Fast Forward
  2. “503 upload error” during file upload from Xtreamer web UI
  3. File can’t be uploaded to folder containing multibyte character(Korean/Chinese/Japanese) in folder name
  4. FTP file uploaded error “530 server busy”
    a) If this symptom found, Restore Default will be needed
  5. Korean missing character in subtitle

Improvements:

  1. “Kerning” (black line between letters) from Arabic subtitle removed.
  2. Audio CD detection.

[UPDATE²] PayPal issues? Here is why…

Update²: PayPal has been disabled

Read the official statement here.

Update: PayPal has been reactivated.

PayPal decided to change their policy for fees. Given that the Xtreamer is selling already at a very low price to the customers, this means less turnover so Xtreamer.net is now in negotiation with Paypal to find a solution. Any rumours about a PayPal ban due to whatever reasons… is pure nonsense.

Transactions via PayPal will be available in a few days. Please use other payment methods for the meantime if applicable.
