Watching photos on the Xtreamer works pretty well. Using a USB stick filled with some out-of-the-cam JPG photos from a EOS 450D results in loading times around 1sec per image. But you have to note that each image is like 3-6 MB in size. I expect that watching images of that filesize will be faster when using an internal hard disk, not sure about external. The following video demonstrates the USB stick option.

Note: the audio is not from the video itself but using YouTube's audio swap feature.

The Xtreamer loads photos pretty fast. I don't think the WDTV can ever underbid this, no matter how good their firmware will become.
