Telnet

Recent firmwares do not require you anymore to install a modified firmware to enable Telnet. Telnet access is the most easy and fast way to have a look into the file and folder structure of your little Xtreamer gadget. For working in the Telnet session I recommend to use Putty, which you can find here: http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/download.html

If you are interested in the whole story of how all of this started and want to know more about the latest updates and additions to our Xtreamer's Linux base, feel free to read the "HACK" thread here:

http://forum.xtreamer.net/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=970&p=14724&e=14724

Now after you have read the whole thread (you did, right?) I still need to warn you: be careful with what you do in your Telnet session. If you are not experienced and not sure with what you are actually doing there you risk to brick your system which will result in an unstable or non-working device.

This said, here is what you need to enable Telnet:

  1. download the necessary files from http://files.mavvy.net/xtreamer/fs.zip
  2. extract all 3 files (busybox, fakeshell.php, fakeshell.css) on a storage disk connected to the Xtreamer, I'll use my internal harddisk HDD1/sda1
  3. start the fakeshell at http://<yourXtreamerIP>/media/sda1/fakeshell.php and make sure JavaScript is enabled
  4. click on TELNETD and hit [ENTER]
  5. click on PROCESSES and hit [ENTER] to see a list of running processes
  6. if you find /tmp/usbmounts/sda1/busybox telnetd -l /bin/sh somewhere near the bottom of the list, you're good to go
  7. start Putty and open a Telnet connection to Xtreamer using your Xtreamer's IP and port 23

Again, be aware of what you are doing. Think twice before executing commands or modifying files. If you know what you are doing then there's a lot of interesting stuff you can do to your Xtreamer, like installing a torrent or usenet client, modify subtitle fonts, change your WORKGROUP name, enable multiple FTP logins, etc...

This is my fakeshell script...... and here it's showing the hard disk usage.
