Scythe

Now let's get back to how I did the Scythe mod. I will get right to the picture part where you can see what I did. Read the captions below the pictures! Aaah, I actually forgot to document the part where I removed the aluminium covers from the plastic case. To get an idea how this can be done, you can check that particular part in this video made by mempo. I don't recommend to remove the front panel as shown in the video coz there is an easier way to get to the PCB. Remember? I showed it on the previous page.

So here it is... the notorious Scythe fan! This is the plug the Scythe fan uses? Doh!Let's look if this can be connected ...... to the plug of an old eSATA case I found which I don't use anymore.Ok come to me baby...... mmmh...... naahhh, this won't work! So put them back in and...CHOP! :)Okay! I hope you have checked the pictures on the previous page...... which deal with disassembling the case. After removing the side cover...... there are 3 screws left and then we finally have...... the naked Xtreamer! Now I got the cable of the Scythe and the one which I cut off my old eSATA enclosure. This is where I want it to go...... should look nice and clean later. Now let's go over to some more fun!As you can see, I am using tape which is actually for mounting mirrors or other things... it is about 1mm thick, so it's exactly as thick as the original cover. What a nice coincident! Now let's cut the tape lengthwise and stick it to the bottom of the Scythe.Like this!Note that I didn't stick it to the far borders but leave a little gap coz this will fit into the case very nicely later.Don't need this part of the tape... let's get rid of it!At the end you should have something like this...... looks funny but it will do the job to keep the Scythe sticked to the case very well, believe me!Okay, now we need to get these together...... easy one!Not to forget: use tape to isolate it, to prevent shorting :)Isolating part...... blah... :)... boring...... blah... (:... blaaaaah... [:... yawn!... finished yet?Soon!Almost!Done! Now fix the Scythe onto the Xtreamer case...... and with the 1mm double sided tape it looks as if the Scythe was made especially for the Xtreamer :) Let's reassemble the Xtreamer!Nearly forgot this...Say good-bye little Sunon fan.At this point I tested if the Scythe was running and it surely was, and I could barely hear anything! As I didn't like that the Xtreamer case is "open" at both ends of the Scythe, I decided to to something against it, so I bought this fantastic material made of hard/rigid foam (Hartschaumstoff in German) which is exactly 100mm wide and maybe 250mm long...... but too bad it is about 3mm thick as I could not find any 1mm material which would of course look much better. An alternative would be to use an empty DVD case which you don't need anymore. So to make it fit into the "holes" we gotta round the edges a bit...... be careful though, don't be too harsh here :)Yeah this is close to what it should look like.Finished...Just for fun I actually cutted and rounded it so it would fit in as an 1:1 replacement for the original side cover but...... since I was going to use it for something else let's continue! See these "holes" that I mean?Yeah, ugly!We gotta cut a part of the cover to fit in there...... easy job with a sharp knife! So that at the end you will get...... 2 of these. It's no problem if they are a little bigger coz then you could just clip them into the case without the need to use glue or more tape.Just because it refused to fit in I had to make it a bit smaller =)Make the borders look more beautiful. Not to forget, the little notch for...... the cables!Ladies and Gentlemen...the popular Scythe mod! :)Looks ok I think!?Black, red, gold? Made in Germany? Yes, by me! :)Now I can rest assured that my girlfriend won't be annoyed by the noise of the old fan, which was actually not that loud... !§&!$)"%This goes into the safe (the Xtreamer box)! In case I wanna go back to original state =)
