Poor Device with discusting service!

I am sorry but the service is very, very poor for this device. I had troubles (Version 2.2 , Mach 2010, bought at xtreamer.net) and cannot return it now, as they charge you nearly half of the cost of the Xtreamer! Support keeps you waiting and treads you even like a beta tester. Nice try, I’m very disappointed of the device and the support at really all!!! You’ll need the sidewinder cooling plates + expensive shipping = makes the xtreamer much more expensive than other devices.

check the forum as well, as

check the forum as well, as the best support you can get nowadays is in the official forum.

WOL from xtreamer to etray-z

At now, etray-z can wake on lan with instructions on this site. But, Could be turn on etray-z from xtreamer? I believe this idea is perfect to people use both of devices, no? Thanks a lot!

i'm afraid that both xtreamer

i'm afraid that both xtreamer and e-trayz are not capable of the WOL feature. so you cannot wake them up :|

Bad customer service. I never received it.

I ordered the Xtreamer from their European website on the 18th of November as a Christmas gift and I am still waiting for it. It’s making me wonder if the whole thing is a scam. Either way, I don’t recommend it, even without trying it. At first DHL had an issue with my address and on the 12th December it was returned to sender, after that Xtreamer support told me it had been sent out in one of those default messages they send when they ship it. They sent me this message twice and I have now asked for a refund. Not recommended.

Sorry to hear you got those

Sorry to hear you got those troubles with the shipment. I am sure you can work this out with the sales team, even if it will be a refund. Another thing you can be sure about is that all this is not a scam. We are way passed this thoughts. What European site did you use? Maybe u didnt order at an official partner site?

Connecting an external DVD Drive

Hi Mavvy... thanks for the amazing review. I'm looking at the Xtreamer as a replacement for my DVD player and not simply for playing off an external HDD. I have a Samsung USB DVD drive and forums indicate that this should connect well with the Xtreamer and regular non-copyright media should be playable good enough (future upgrades to add data-dvd playback capabilities). My question is that would playing of such a DVD support 5.1 channel sound output?

hi msuri, yes i would assume

hi msuri, yes i would assume so. and i want to go for the Samsung 0084C. these should run well with USB power only. retail/original DVDs and AudioCDs are now supported with AutoStart function :)

Fastest (and most reliable) way to transfer files

Hi Mavvy, First of all, thoroughly awesome review, and awesomely thorough too :) I especially like that you've bothered to go in an update it periodically. I too have a WDTV (use external HDDs) and used to have a modded xbox which I used to FTP files over to before that (friend showed me how). The question I have is about networking which I'm really rubbish at (and understanding). When I get the xtreamer, I'll have it connected up to my b/g wireless router. Will prob used it wired physically if I can be bothered to route the cat5 round. After reading your article, read up briefly on uPNP, Samba, DDNS, NFS etc. You stated file transfer speeds for Samba but can I just ask, of the different possibilities, what is the *fastest* and most reliable way to set it up for transfers (excluding telnet). Streaming reliability isn't so important as 98% of time will try to get the file onto an internal 500GB HDD beforehand. Any help appreciated, thanks!

Hi Noli, the fastest way to

Hi Noli, the fastest way to transfer files to the internal HDD would of course be to connect the Xtreamer directly to the PC via the included USB Mini->A cable. If you just transfer some small to middle sized files, you can use the normal Samba protocol. Since I've upgraded to a Gigabit-Switch I have a speed of 8.3MB/s from Xtreamer to PC and about 6.3MB/s from PC to Xtreamer. FTP is slower than that on the Xtreamer. Tested with v2.0.1 ... and I would really recommend to set it up wired, as wireless will never be fast enough.

Thanks for the lovely review

it made my decide on buying the xtreamer :) cheers!

Now that's a review

Kudos on an exhaustive review. The gold standard.

xtreamer mods

Hi, Thank you for your very nice site on xtreamer and your active role in the xtreamer community. I like to mod especially software and in the past have compiled many firmware changes for fonera routers. I now switched to Xtreamer and managed to get a serial console connected so I can do whatever I want to the device. Especially the implemented linux does not seem very well layed out, but I will have to study that a bit more. I think for modding we need another board as the xtreamer guys are not very fond of discussing software mods on their board. Can you help ? regards, intrax

hey intrax, sorry for late

hey intrax, sorry for late reply and another sorry for my silly post over at the "serial console thread". i think u know which one i mean^^

i have known the admins to be very open and supportive when it comes to modifications to the xtreamer, may it be hard- or software wise. in fact, when we were talking about the "HACK" and mod threads in the forum party chat, the admin said he is very interested in that thread and want's to give us all support we need as soon as firmware 2 gets stable, whatever that means for us.

version 2 is coming in a few days and i think the best place to discuss software mods is still the official forum and many topics are already discussed there. i'll happily follow your serial console thread too coz it's very interesting. i remember in the past i did this kind of modification to my old nokia phone via serial cable to com1 port etc... :) best regards, mavvy

Internet audio via optical out

Hi Mavvy -- hope this find you well. I know several people have reported the same or similar issue but I haven't found a specific reference to this being a bug that might be fixed. Appreciate if you have any knowledge on the matter; My setup is HDMI connection direct to the TV, and optical audio out to my Amp. That's how I want to run it. All movies seem fine, no problems with audio streams to the Amp. Now, if I play anything from the internet, YouTube, Movie Trailers, NASA, etc.... there is no audio. I found the audio is also coming from the RCA but with the Samsung TV I can only get that audio if I select AV input (composite). At present I have to either change input on TV to AV, or change XT HDMI audio output to ON and switch Amp off and change volume control on my Logitech Harmony to TV. Yes I have a programmable remote so this issue is more of a nuisance to me rather than a real PITA but for others I suspect the latter. Does anyone know if this is to be addressed i.e. simply put: enable internet streams to output audio via the optical out? Thanks.

Hi keefnet, for now I can

Hi keefnet, for now I can only tell that this is known in the forum and it seems that a lot of people have trouble with Youtube audio via optical cable. I used to have sound when I still was using optical audio but that was back when I had fw 1.0.1 on my device. Currently I use HDMI into my AVR incl. audio so I can't really test at the moment. So I can't even tell if it's a general problem or only occurs on specific audio equipment. I should find the time this week to test it on my system and update here.

Scythe fan mod - suck or blow?

Hi Mavvy. Great pics on the fan mod so I got the fan, now at the point of connecting it and wondering -- in your opinion, do you think pull air out with the fan fins showing or push air in with the fins pointing to the XT? Appreciate your view on that. If pushing air in, I'm thinking that Maplin (UK) do a fan finger guard and filter for either £2.99 or £4.99 ( I don't recall) but that'd help stop ingress of dust but would affect the efficiency of it. I'm probably leaning towards how you did it -- fins out and pull warm air away from the unit. That'd negate the need for a filter, although all that dist would get in elsewhere so maybe filter and bl;ow air in would really be better. Regards, ~Keefnet

hi again keefnet. i didnt

hi again keefnet. i didnt have to think long about blowing air in our out. i chose the - in my eyes - more effective way: to blow air directly _onto_ the heatsink to cool it down. you're right, since the case is open anyway, there's no chance to avoid dust coming in, no matter in what direction the fan is blowing. and while blowing air in, there is a stronger airflow inside to cool the other parts. my household has no kids (yet) and my gf won't touch the fan accidentally i think... even if she did, it wouldn't hurt, i already tried it lol. nevertheless, i have also thought about some finger protection... if you find the link to that Maplin guard, please let me know. I am looking for some guard which has the shape like the cover of a shoe box which u can just put over the scythe and fix it with screws on the sides... the scythe already has 6 holes for screws on the sides, that would make it perfect.

The man with the fan that can.....

Hi Mavvy. Funny I thought the fan with the fins sticking out was going to be pulling air out but once I fitted it using the original fan cable spliced to the red/black of the Scythe, it sucks air in across the heatsink -- it's so quiet! Maplin finger guard/heatsink is here http://www.maplin.co.uk/module.aspx?moduleno=37597 Pretty sure that's a 100mm guard/filter although it doesn;t say so om the link. Just gotta cut some plastic trim to go above and below to finish it off nicely. Thanks again... all the info is great -- just gagging to get 1.0.3 code -- even beta I'd like to try but guess I'd have to beg, etc.... Funny thing though, after putting the fan on and wiring back up, now if I try hit OK on any internet videos like YouTube or NASA, it does nothing -- then click right arrow... shows details of the link... then press OK on play and it effectively crashes and restarts back to the power on screen. Last time I tried playing internet streams they worked - sometimes drop out, but would play when pressing OK whilst on one. Something I'll keep an eye on and report issue of not resolved with new code when I get it. Cheers. ~Keefnet

thx for the link. internet

thx for the link. internet services: my guess is that they are working on that since yesterday or so coz i experienced problems yesterday too. the day before yesterday it was working fine. it has been reported in forum too. they should have fixed it soon :)

What's included

Hi, I'm wondering which cables are included in the box, USB / HDMI / Audio ?? cheers T

i have a usb cable (mini usb

i have a usb cable (mini usb <-> usb a) and a composite cable (cinch, audio/video), does the cable from the power plug count? :) no hdmi cable

What's about NDAS

Does this box support NDAS? I've a Ximenta's ShareDisk drive usind on my XP PC. Can I access to those files using Xtreamer. Thakns in advance!

I don't own a NDAS but IIRC

I don't own a NDAS but IIRC currently there's no official support for NDAS but as the system will be opened to us later when the firmware is stable, we might be able to get the necessary files installed on the Xtreamer to hook up a NDAS. Isn't this already very old system? Xtreamer will release a NAS soon, might be a better choice :)

Does it support a USB hub to add more external drives directly

Hi. Super feedback and perfect English. I tried the modified firmware for the WDTV to support a USB HUB but very odd behaviour (inconsistent) so I ditched that idea, but wondered if the Xtreamer supported more than the two external USB drives - especially if one of the two ports is taken up using the 802.11n dongle? Thanks again Mavvy.

Iguess u wanted movies

Iguess u wanted movies indexed into WDTV's "Media Library" from more than 2 USB disks. I've always wanted that but could not get it to work, it only indexed the files from 1 disk in USB1 and from 1 disk in USB2, even if I connected them via USB hub it only randomly indexed from 1 of the disks connected to the hub, the other disk was ignored. I could only use the other drives when browsing to them using the "Folder view".

Now the Xtreamer: it does not have an index feature at all, means, no "Media Library" which indexes files. The feature called "Media Library" in Xtreamer is comparable to WDTV's folder view, you can browse to each drive and start files from there, of course you can access all hard disks which are connected through the hub. But yeah... no damn indexing feature yet :(

BluRay ISO image playback

Hi. Great review and updates/links real useful - many thanks. I'm currently a WDTV user and ordered the Xtreamer last week -- had a notification of 4th batch shipment 1st Sepetember. Question I have is that you reported it plays DVD ISO's and supports chapter skip (great - WDTV does the file skip like you mentioned for 1.01 f/w).... but did you try any BluRay ISO playback and if yes and it works, does that also support audio/subtitle selection and chapter skip? At this time I convert BluRay to M2TS files with no compression - play back fine on WDTV but no chapter skip and subtitles I have to create a SRT file from the sub de-muxed files using SupRip - works fine but needs some hand-holding to correctly OCR the titles. Thanks again.

hi keefnet, i just tested

hi keefnet, i just tested again this single file, since playback of BD rips in ISO format is not supported yet (will come with the new SDK which should be the base in fw v1.0.4 but then again we have to see if it plays BD rips with all the menus and extra stuff or if you can just browse down to the m2ts files).

Currently with 1.0.2, I cannot switch or even display subtitles yet but I can switch audio tracks on the fly. Skipping chapters behaves like in fw 1.0.1 with DVD ISOs. So BD support in the Xtreamer is currently only basic, like on WDTV. So we have to create .srt files for now...

Cheeky question now:

Hi Mavvy -- you da man! Thanks for those feedback notes. So, after some advice really: as I mentioned before, I use tsMuxR and backup my BD to M2TS. This maintains picture quality - just wondered if you're familiar with compression tools to easily compress either BD direct or the M2TS just to save some space but in an easy kind of 1-shot process? Another question, although might show my stupidity or lazyness: I downloaded and installed the Movie Jukebox application, pointed it at some local disk with some ISO's on and it created cover art and description files in the same directories - does this then imply if I put that disk on the Xtreamer it'll will show the cover art, etc? Then, when adding movies to the disk via network access, would the Xtreamer then also be able to generate the art files if internet access or is that function specific to a local PC to perform? Many thanks again.

hey there, no im not familiar

hey there, no im not familiar with compressing bds (yet). still just power up my ps3 to watch the bds, too lazy to convert them :) for my dvds i think i used "fair use wizard 2" or something like that, maybe it exists for bd too.

forget the xtreamer movie jukebox. in its current state it's absolutely useless :) the generated pictures can be only viewed like normal photos. look here: http://www.mavvy.net/reviews/xtreamer/movie-jukebox

best would be to ask the admins in the chat and give them your order number. they can check directly for you when they are in the chat. 3 weeks ago, i suppose you are in 2nd or 3rd batch so expect it from end of august till mid of september.

Great Review!

Hi, thanks for this great review! I ordered mine just after reading it :-) Quick question: I see that you own the same Fritz Box that I have. Did you test streaming a video from a usb HDD pluged into the Fritz box? As W-lan seems to be too slow for streaming HD content, I think about doing this. Best Zarillo

hi, i haven't tested the upnp

hi, i haven't tested the upnp feature of the fritzbox with the xtreamer yet but will give it a try and update my review. if i remember correctly, i have read someone posting that the xtreamer does not find the upnp stream of the fritzbox but never say never :)

Given the fact that the

Given the fact that the FritzBox will only support USB1.1 speeds, upnp streaming would be very limited anyway. You might be able to use it for audio.

The best review ever

That's the best and most complete review not only of XTREAMER, but also of any other gadget I've read in many years. I'm waiting an Xtreamer on third batch (10th Aug 09).

Hi Mavvy! I like your review

Hi Mavvy! I like your review alot. Do you know anything about the bricked units? Mine died yesterday with just a red screen. In the forums more and more seem t et this problem. I filled in my RMA today, hope for a new from 2nd batch :-) /Regards Joacim

hi thx for comments to my

hi thx for comments to my review. sh*t, sorry to hear your unit bricked. have you tried the emergency flash yet??? so far i only know of two indicators for bricked units. either a) the front led is permanently red and does not switch to green or b) the led is blinking red and nog switching to green. i have not read about red screen yet. but if you have not tried the emergency firmware flash you should give it a try! here is the link: http://forum.xtreamer.net/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=735

Thank you!

First of all, thanks a lot for your review. Very nice!! Curiosity: - Did you test it with internal HD already? - How did you use it with Tversity?

Superb Review, especially

Superb Review, especially becasue u also own a PS3 ! So do i Anyway mine wil be delivered 10 August, am curious...

hi and thx :) i just managed

hi and thx :) i just managed to empty my 2.5" hdd this week. took so long coz it was full of important stuff and i had nowhere to back it up. so i had to buy another 3.5" lol... but to come back to topic: i haven't tried the 2.5" hdd internally yet but i will find the time these days and update it in my review.

i used tversity just to serve my media files on my normal pc to the xtreamer over wired network: 1. installed tversity on pc, 2. adding my videos/music into the tversity library, 3. browing these files on the xtreamer via upnp

some ugly bug in upnp: the filesize displays 0 byte sometimes but i had no real big problems yet playing video and music. i guess this will be fixed in the future coz they are currently improving network issues.
